Coral reefs are on the front line of climate change. Approximately 90% will be lost by 2050 even if the global warming targets set by the Paris Climate Agreement are achieved.
Unless urgent action is taken, we are facing a complete collapse of one of the world's most important ecosystems, posing an enormous economic, social and environmental crisis.
Despite the seriousness of the coral reef crisis, there has surprisingly been no global plan to save this critical ecosystem... until now. The 50 Reefs initiative brings together scientists from around the world to create a list of 50 critical reefs - in terms of geography, diversity, and resilience - and launch a campaign to catalyze global action and investment to protect reefs into the future.
