Where are the 50 Reefs?

The ​fifty ​coral reefs identified in the landmark study are shown ​in purple on the map​ below. It’s important to note that the fifty reefs identified on the map aren’t just ​​coral reefs that individually are the least vulnerable to climate change​, but together form an optimal portfolio of reefs that are most likely to survive climate change and be able to repopulate surrounding reefs over time. This selection process is similar to that used to create investment portfolios, which helps reduce the risk of investment loss (having too many reefs in one region, for example).

In addition to the 50 Reefs (purple markers), ​additional reefs ​(turquoise markers) were identified in the study. These are also optimal locations for bolstering conservation efforts. However, they were not selected to be part of the portfolio. You can read the full Scientific Paper here.
